DO ALL GOOD THINGS REALLY COME FROM GOD?

We often attribute financial & vocational success to the intellectual ability of an individual , education, luck, upbringing, or circumstances in life. Likewise we blame the lack of this success on the lack of these things.

The truth is, God controls everything and, while we are still responsible to make wise decisions & be obedient to the principles of God’s Word, it is ultimately God who allows financial & vocational “success” in our lives.

“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.”James 1:17

“… In him we live and move and have our being’…”Acts 17:28a

“Everyone also to whom God has given wealth and possessions and power to enjoy them, and to accept his lot and rejoice in his toil—this is the gift of God.” – Ecclesiastes 5:19

The real issue is contentment.

You may say, “If God controls everything then why am I struggling financially and vocationally? How can I learn to be content in my situation?” These are good questions. For the answer, consider these principles:

1. God has given us everything we need to enjoy life:

His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire.” 2 Peter 1:3-4

And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”Philippians 4:19

God has promised to give us all we NEED to survive in life. He knows what we can handle more than we do. We often want more than He wants us to have. To be content we must accept that God has & will give us what we need for life. We just have to learn to be content with that.

2. God’s plan is the ultimate driver of all He does.

for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.”Philippians 2:13

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”Romans 12:2

God does everything for His glory and our good. He wants us to enjoy an abundant life. However, we often define what that means by the philosophy of the world around us not the definition God gives in His Word. If we lived life loving God and loving others, like the Bible teaches us (Matthew 22:36-40), we would all have a much better life. People ignore God, disobey His instruction on how to live and then blame Him when life goes wrong. It is not God’s fault. God teaches us how to live because He wants us to enjoy life.

If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.”John 15:10-11

3. Trust God not the World

His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire.”2 Peter 1:3-4

While these verses teach us that God has given us everything pertaining to life, they also teach us two very important facts about this:

A. We have all we need for godliness.

This assumes we want to be godly in our life. This just means we want to live our life the way God wants us to as explained in His Word & through His promises. This is key to being able to enjoy what God has given us.

B. We have escaped the corruption of this world that appeals to our sinful desires.

This reminds us that the world is all about appealing to our fleshly, human desires of covetousness, lust, greed, selfishness, etc. In order for us to enjoy life, we have to break free of the philosophy of this world, that success is defined by materialism and whether or not we get what we want. Until we overcome these fleshly desires, we will always struggle to understand why our life is so empty.

So, do all good things really come from God? Absolutely. We just have to be obedient to His Word in order to be able to enjoy them.

At this Christmas season, accept the greatest gift ever given, Jesus Christ, into your life and begin to really live by enjoying all the good God has for you through the promises of His Word. Live your life for Him, beginning now!
